Happy almost Nurses Week!

Here’s a peek at what’s ahead:

AANP’s support of Nurses week will include airing the AANP NP Awareness spots on national cable spots and a few select markets next week. Nurses week provides an excellent opportunity to underscore the value and choice that NPs provide in health care.

Below is a copy of the spot that will air.

Thanks for all you do for our patients and profession.  Let us know how you all are celebrating our profession and colleagues.

ACO Bill Introduced in House of Representatives
AANP is happy to report that (H.R. 1160), ACO Assignment Improvement Act of 2017 was introduced in the House by Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Representative Lynn Jenkins (R-KS). Although the Affordable Care Act recognizes nurse practitioners as eligible to participate in Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), under the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the statute prevents Medicare beneficiaries who receive their primary care services from NPs from being assigned to ACOs in the program. This legislation would improve the way beneficiaries are assigned under the Medicare shared savings program by allowing the assignment of nurse practitioners' patients to Medicare shared savings ACOs. Please reach out to your Representatives and ask them to support, H.R. 1160the ACO Assignment Improvement Act of 2017.

Home Health Bill Introduced in the Senate
We are also happy to report that (S.445), the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act, was introduced in the Senate by Senator Collins (R-ME) and Senator Cardin (D-MD). Passage of this legislation will make it possible for nurse practitioners to provide necessary services for their Medicare patients by allowing them to certify their patients to be eligible for home health care services. We encourage you to please reach out to your Senators and ask them to cosponsor S.445, the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act. Please stay tuned, as we anticipate a companion bill will be introduced in the House.

2017 Health Policy Conference
The 2017 Health Policy Conference sold out again this year! Attendees heard from an impressive group of speakers and on the final day of the conference, approximately 200 nurse practitioners wearing gold NP pins met with their members of Congress and staff on Capitol Hill. With NP issue brief packets in hand and personal NP stories to tell, they urged members of Congress to remove federal barriers to NP practice.

AANP Advocacy Center
Throughout this new legislative session, it is extremely important for members of Congress to hear from the NPs they represent regarding these key legislative issues impacting NP practice. We ask that you contact your members of Congress, using AANP’s Advocacy Center, to help educate them on issues of importance to NP practice:

As always, your Federal and State Government Affairs teams are available to answer any questions. Please feel free to contact us at or

This past year the Nurse Practitioner Support and Alignment Network (NP SAN) has recruited almost 5,300 nurse practitioners (NPs) and their affiliated practices into the Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPi). We are committed to enrolling 7,100 NPs and their practices by 2019!

We are also dedicated to providing NPs educational content on patient centered care, data-driven quality improvement, and sustainable business operations. This year we had several successful events from continuing education sessions at the AANP 2016 National Conference to a new Lunch n’ Learn monthly webinar series.

Upcoming Events:

The Importance of AANP Membership

Join | Renew Update AANP Membership
AANP is the only national professional organization that represents Nurse Practitioners. Two years ago the AANP merged with the American College of NPs. This combined power and membership, nearing half of all NPs nationally, has yielded terrific results in terms of national legislation, partnerships with provider organizations and has given NPs a stronger voice. Sometimes it is difficult to identify individual benefits from memberships in a national organization, but I encourage you to visit this website - - and to seriously consider joining, and if you are already a member, consider maintaining your membership.
