Become a Preceptor

Are you interested in becoming a preceptor? As a member benefit, NPI has a listing of all members who have indicated that they would be willing to be a preceptor. If you would like to join this resource list, please contact Traci Jablonski.

The NPI Preceptor Program allows NPI members to participate in offering to precept an NP student and allows current NPI Student members to locate a preceptor. A preceptor is commonly defined as: 1. a teacher; an instructor or 2. An expert or specialist, who gives practical experience and training to a student, especially of nursing

The NP school where the student is enrolled establishes the preceptor requirements that must be met. The preceptor and student, after consultation with each other, will decide if they are a "good fit" and a preceptor-student relationship may then commence. The preceptor is expected to assess the student's needs and arrange for a preceptor-ship learning environment consistent with program goals and to evaluate the student's work. The preceptor is expected to provide day-to-day clinical teaching while meeting clinical practice expectations. The preceptor is expected to have current clinical skills and knowledge, help students recognize their assumptions and think through their management decisions, and model effective communication with clients that emphasizes psychosocial aspects of care. Preceptors can receive credit toward national recertification. Check with your certifying body for details.

To sign up to be a Preceptor - check the "preceptor" box when filling out your membership application form

Join the Mental Health/Psych Forum

We are pleased to announce that Nurse Practitioners of Idaho is developing the first Membership Forum for Psychiatric/Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurses. The Forum has a structure similar to a committee and will address issues specific to Psychiatric/Mental Health advanced practice. NPI will act as a liaison with membership in regard to Psychiatric/Mental Health clinical practice. Current, regular (NP), associate (any licensed nurse), student or retired members of NPI are eligible to join the forum at no cost. The Psychiatric/Mental Health Forum members will provide quarterly articles for the NPI Newsletter and the website. A specific email directory listing the Forum members email addresses will be developed to facilitate efficient information sharing between Forum members. A dedicated area of NPI's website will be developed for the Psychiatric/Mental Health Forum.

If you would like to become of a member of the forum, please contact Beverlee Furner.

Become a Peer Review

As a membership benefit, Nurse Practitioners of Idaho offers a mechanism whereby volunteer NP members of NPI review a selected sample of patient records and offer an opinion on the care provided by Nurse Practitioners.

The Peer Review Process considers the regulatory requirements of the Idaho Board of Nursing specific to Advanced Practice Professional Nurses and the peer review standards established by national professional nursing organizations representing APRNs.

Program Components:

  • Mechanism for NP members of NPI to volunteer their services as a Peer Reviewer.
  • Criteria and forms to complete for the NP who needs to be Peer Reviewed to complete and submit to the NP Reviewer.
  • Letters of initial request to be a Peer Reviewed and a Confidentiality Agreement to be signed by the Peer Review provider.
  • Reporting mechanism for feedback.
  • Documentation process void of patient identification that provides documentation that the Peer Review process was completed.

The Peer Review Committee is Kate Martin, MSN, NP and Randy Hudspeth, MS, NP, FAANP. Target date for project completion and process implementation is January, 2011. Check back for more information.
